Amity

My capstone project was inspired by the craving for connection in a post-pandemic world. I explored the psychology of gift giving and meaning making, all leading to the design of a tangible experience for students to spark connection on campus. Introducing Amity - the reflection and connection machine, allowing you to create, notify, and print personal messages for others.
Role: Design, Branding, Marketing

Meet Amity

We began by observing student life post-lockdown and noticed something subtle: people were physically together again, but emotionally still at arm’s length. Through interviews and research, we heard the same theme repeated—"I want to connect, but I don’t know how."
This insight shaped our design challenge:

How might we make it easier to share small, meaningful interactions with others on campus?

Prototyping and Testing

We started with mirrored acrylic cards, each engraved with a unique affirmation or prompt, followed by a simple call-to-action: "scan in" and "pass it on." Each card featured a QR code linking to a form where users could log their experience - sharing how the experience made them feel and who they received the card from. This allowed us to track engagement and showed us... we were on to something!

Branding & Marketing

As part of our mid-point campaign, we created a physical human-powered machine and an interactive poster that revealed a hidden message when viewed through our custom red lens glasses.

The Machine in Action

As part of our mid-point campaign, we created an interactive poster that revealed a hidden message when viewed through our custom red lens glasses.

Outcomes

Amity was a tangible expression of the skills, frameworks, and design mindset we developed through our Product Design degree. It gave us the opportunity to translate those tools into something real—applying creativity, empathy, and systems thinking to craft a meaningful experience for our campus community. It also introduced me to the power of pop-ups and experiential marketing—showing how design can be used not just to solve problems, but to spark curiosity, invite participation, and build emotional connection in unexpected ways.
